Mamata hints at INDIA Bloc takeover, says 'sometimes governments last only a day'

In the wake of her party's significant victory over the BJP in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has issued a stark reminder about the transient nature of political power. Speaking at a Trinamool Parliamentary Party meeting on Saturday, Banerjee hinted at the potential for the INDIA bloc to soon take over at the Centre, emphasizing that governments "sometimes last only for a day".

This statement comes on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony, which the TMC has decided to boycott. Banerjee criticized the formation of the new government as "illegal and undemocratic," indicating her party's strong disapproval of the current political situation.

The BJP, having won only 240 Lok Sabha seats in the recent elections, finds itself 32 seats short of a simple majority, forcing it to rely heavily on alliances with parties like Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and Nitish Kumar's JDU. This dependency marks a significant shift from the previous two elections, where the BJP secured majorities on its own.

Banerjee took a sharp dig at the BJP's reduced mandate, remarking, "Those who spoke of 400 (Lok Sabha seats) could not get even a simple majority on their own." She further suggested that the INDIA bloc is strategically observing the situation, implying that a change in government could be imminent. "Ultimately, it will be a new INDIA government, but let them be for a few days. Sometimes, governments last only for a day... Anything can happen, who knows if this government will last even 15 days?" Banerjee remarked.
